Extruded & CNC-Machined Aluminum Enclosure

Manufacturing Application · Illustrative Example

An aluminum enclosure can combine a repeated body section with machined connector openings and separate end plates. This guide follows the choices that connect the internal equipment layout to a drawing-defined housing.

Start with the Internal Envelope

Define usable internal space, board or module positions, mounting heights and the route for cables. Include the selected connector drawings and the access needed to install them. An external size alone does not establish the clearance available for internal components.

  • Locate board supports and end-plate interfaces from practical datums.
  • Check screw length, thread engagement and access for assembly tools.
  • Identify the faces that carry thermal interface material, seals or grounding contacts.
  • Show which cover or panel must be removable for service.

Choose the Body Construction

A repeated cross-section may suit an extruded body with cut lengths and secondary machining. For development quantities or changing geometry, machining from stock can be reviewed before committing to a dedicated die. A formed enclosure is another route when the design is based on thin walls and bent panels.

Compare the complete component: die or fixture work, cut lengths, openings, threads, end plates, treatment and assembly. Confirm the extrusion section independently from length-specific features added later.

Specify Material and Finished Interfaces

Select the aluminum alloy, temper and starting form together. 6063 may be considered for profile geometry and appearance; 6061 may be reviewed where the mechanical requirements and available section favor it. The accepted grade depends on the actual design and supply form.

Mark visible faces, masking boundaries and dimensions that apply after finishing. Electrical contact, sliding covers and threaded joints can require different surface conditions. For adjacent cosmetic pieces, agree a physical finish reference and the permitted contact marks.

Plan the Sample Review

Check the body, end plates and selected hardware as a defined assembly. Inspect connector alignment, internal mounting positions, cover clearance and the agreed finished dimensions. Identify any proposed adjustment and record the approved drawing revision before batch release.

Sealing, shielding and thermal performance require an agreed product design and validation method. State these requirements in the project scope alongside the mechanical inspection plan.

Prepare the Enquiry Package

Provide the section and finished-part drawings, model, cut lengths, alloy and temper, initial and repeat quantities, mating parts and finish reference. Identify the required dimensional records, supplied hardware and protective packing.
