Manufacturing Application · Illustrative Example
An appearance-sensitive aluminum housing needs a coordinated route from the starting material to the protected finished component. Cosmetic faces, mating dimensions and contact areas should be defined together before machining and treatment are planned.
Divide the Surface Requirements
Mark the faces visible in normal use and show how adjacent housings, covers or trims will be viewed together. Identify the grain or brushing direction where relevant and distinguish cosmetic requirements from sealing, sliding or mounting functions.
- Define the color, gloss and texture reference for visible zones.
- Identify acceptable fixture, rack or contact-mark locations.
- Mark bores, threads and locating faces that must meet finished dimensions.
- Show electrical contact areas and other surfaces requiring masking.
Review the Starting Form and Machining
Choose an extruded body or machined stock around the geometry, quantity and design stability. Specify the exact alloy, temper and starting form. Different materials or stock conditions can respond differently to the same preparation and finishing process.
Plan tool access, edge treatment and deburring with the final surface in mind. Deep scratches, inconsistent machining patterns or handling damage may remain visible after anodizing. Agree the preparation needed for the intended appearance rather than assuming treatment will conceal earlier marks.
Approve a Relevant Finish Reference
For critical appearance, use a physical sample representative of the proposed material and preparation. A color name or screen image can start a discussion, but viewing conditions, texture and allowable variation still need definition.
Where pieces sit side by side, identify the matching set and the faces being compared. Record the approved reference and process scope so later batches can be reviewed against the same requirements. A change in alloy, texture or treatment should trigger review of the affected appearance and fit.
Inspect and Protect the Finished Component
Check visual zones separately from the critical finished dimensions. Review masking boundaries, thread condition, cover fit and the contact surfaces identified on the drawing. State any coating measurements or test records required with the order.
Use packing that separates visible faces and supports protruding features. Agree how parts will be handled during any later assembly, including removal of protective material. Sealing or other product-performance ratings require separately specified design validation and testing.
Prepare the Enquiry Package
Provide the drawing revision, material and condition, finish specification, appearance sample, cosmetic zones, quantities and mating-part details. Add the finished-dimension checks, records and packing requirements needed for acceptance.
Continue with surface finishing, anodized appearance planning and the appearance specification guide.
