Agree tolerances around function and a practical inspection method. A general tolerance note is a starting point; it does not identify every interface that needs special control.
Start from the locating features
Mark the faces and axes used to position the component in its assembly. Relate critical hole patterns, bores and contact surfaces to understandable datums. Distinguish dimensions that control function from dimensions that can use the general drawing tolerance.
Specify the condition being measured
State whether acceptance applies before or after finishing, heat treatment, conditioning or assembly. Coating and masking can affect a fit, while flexible or moisture-sensitive materials can require defined measurement conditions. Provide the matching component or its controlled interface dimensions when necessary.
Agree the evidence before the order
Identify the dimensions to be reported, the required sampling or first-article scope, and any customer-specified measurement method. Some features need suitable fixtures or accessible reference surfaces. Feasibility and the proposed inspection scope are confirmed during drawing review rather than assumed from a generic capability statement.
